Christianity's Taliban
Wolves in a very thin wool cloak

Craziness, not Christianity.

Rosie O'Donnell wasn't completely wrong when she said, "Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam." Granted, her hostility towards Christianity is just as dangerous and her statement reflects a blind sense of proportion; however, if there is an element in our country that calls itself "Christian" yet possesses the same type of mentality found among millions of Muslims, it presides over the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas.

Meet "Pastor" Fred Phelps. He's the owner of such websites as GodHatesFags.com and GodHatesAmerica.com and purveyor of such messages as "Too Late To Pray! America Is Doomed" and "God Loves Everyone -- The Greatest Lie Ever Told." He displays photos of military coffins draped in American flags with such lines as, "This is the picture that America deserves. Get used to it! You worship at the fag altar, you get boxes draped in your fag flag coming home!"

He and his merry band of morons like to harass those grieving at military funerals with placards that read, "“Thank God for I.E.Ds." His website has a long list of people who are, according the Phelps, in hell. The list includes Ronald Reagan, Reggie White, several Popes and the West Virginia coal miners killed in a tragic accident.

Phelps' obsession with hell probably comes from his close association with hell's proprietor. This guy is not a pastor. He is not a true representative of Jesus Christ. He clearly stands in direct opposition to the Bible and everything that Christianity holds dear. He is corrupt to the core and, very likely, a complete nut job.

Those of us in the West get tired of the silence of so-called "moderate Muslims." We ask if they exist and, if they do, to please stand up and denounce the murderous zealots leading a large faction of their faith. So as a Christian, I would be remiss if I didn't publicly proclaim that Fred Phelps and his ilk do not represent Christianity. The words that come out of his mouth and the actions he leads do not reflect Jesus Christ.

If there were a few million Fred Phelps, Rosie would be right. Luckily, he's just one crackpot. So sleep well, tonight, Rosie. You're safe as long as people like me are still around.
